5 Tips To Make A Group Trip Memorable

Punta de Mita, Mexico

Mastering The Art Of The Group Trip

Twice a year, our entire Modern team spends a week working in destination, building our partnerships, and gaining valuable knowledge and insight into the resorts and wedding venues we book; but outside of these retreats, each member of the team also takes multiple group trips of their own. This has enabled us to master the art of the group trip, and below we’ve included our top 5 recommendations to make your group trip memorable.

1. Plan a Private Event

Private events are a great opportunity to experience something different at the resort. These events typically come at an extra cost, but depending on the size of your group, some resorts offer free events as an incentive. During our Modern work retreat last month, we had a gorgeous private cocktail party on the presidential suite terrace and a neon themed silent disco party.

A Private Cocktail Party

The Secrets & Dreams Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resorts have four presidential suite terraces that can be used to host a beautiful wedding ceremony or cocktail party for up to 90 – 150 guests.

A Neon Silent Disco

Silent discos are a hilarious event idea for your travel group. It’s basically just a dance party where everyone has their own wireless headphones, and often times, there are multiple channels of music so you can dance to your preferred track. If you want a good laugh, just take the headphones off and watch everyone shuffle around in silence.

A Beach Experience

We also highly recommend an event on the beach. You can go with something simple like a beach cocktail party or beach bonfire or you can do something a little extra. Earlier this year, we did the Barefoot Experience at Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos All Inclusive Golf & Spa which is a combination beachfront wine tasting and foot massage. It was off the charts.

2. Book a Group Excursion

We’ve had so many incredible opportunities to stay at beautiful 5 star resorts, but many of our favorite travel memories as a team come from our excursions and adventures off property. Last month, we did the Hidden Beach Island Discovery Excursion of the Marietas Islands, and it was definitely one of our all-time favorite excursions as a team. During our 5-hour adventure, we took a speed boat to a secret beach, Playa del Amor, commonly known as “Lover’s Beach,” and we took pictures on the beautiful secluded beach. We did some snorkeling along the islands, swam through cave formations and picturesque arches, and witnessed tons of different species of wildlife (including the beautiful blue footed boobies). Perfect for a full-day excursion.

3. Pick the Right Resort For Your Group

When picking the right resort for your group, it’s all about getting specific with your wants and needs. Are you looking for adult-only or family-friendly? Pool or beach? Lively or laid back? Do you need to be in-town or can you do something a little more secluded? Either/or questions can help your group make difficult decisions.

In our case, we chose the brand new Secrets Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resort for our work retreat, because while we prefer the adult-only experience during our trips, our destination wedding couples love resort options that offer adult-only & family-friendly accommodations for their guests, and this resort is a great option as one side is adult-only (Secrets) and the other side is family-friendly (Dreams). We love to stay at the properties we book, because it enables us to build close relationships with the wedding, sales, and management teams; and after experiencing the resort, our team is able to share their first-hand knowledge and experience with our clients.

4. Book A Spa Day

This one is especially important for us introverts. Traveling with a group is incredible for making memories, but it can also be a bit draining, so scheduling a spa day half-way through the trip is the perfect opportunity for some down-time and relaxation so you can recharge the batteries and join the group refreshed and ready to go.

5. Organize or Participate in a Give-Back Event

While in destination for our work retreats, we make it a priority to give back to the local communities. In Nuevo Vallarta, we partnered with Pasitos de Luz & Connect Kindness for an incredible give-back initative. It only takes a couple of hours to make a difference, and there’s no better feeling than coming together as a group to help contribute to those in need. These give-back events make up some of our favorite memories in destination and they always bring us closer together.

Pasitos de Luz is a registered non-profit organization in founded by mothers of disabled children to meet their therapeutic, psychological, nutritional, educational and basic needs.

Connect Kindness is a pro-bono organization founded by two members of our team at Modern Destination Weddings & Modern Travelworks (Krystal Aziz & Tim Evans). Their mission is to connect people with nonprofit organizations to inspire kindness, and in addition to featuring organizations and events on their website, social media and podcast, they organize give-back events to help communities in need.
